You can mount an ext3 fs as ext2 and even use the ext2 low level utilities like debugfs. I don't talk about file undeletion under Linux, but about recovering deleted files on the ext2 file system. Additionally, it gives you the file size and tries to determine the file type in the way file 1 does. Included is a l recover 1. It does not require any knowledge about the secrets of the ext2 file system and should be useable by everyone.

First, you have to understand that file undeletion is primarily a question of f2undel file system, not the operating system.
If you encounter some problems while using e2undel, find a bug, miss some features, or need help, please post a message in the appropriate forum at the project page.
When loaded by each process that deletes file, e.
You might consider this before using the undel library on a real multi user system. On several systems, there were no problems using the library. Included is a l. However, I did not test it on a heavily loaded server.
Deleted files recovery howto
The synopsis of e2undel is e2undel -d device -s path [-a] [-t] -d: A new file is stored on this inode and deleted by a process that does not use the undel library. Access rights and owner of deleted files are ignored. If you are in the very unpleasant situation that you neither can use your system without e2jndel file system containing the deleted file nor have another Linux machine available, I strongly suggest to create a RAM disk to build and install the necessary software.
For an example of using e2undel without the undel library, see the deleted file recovery howto. Usually, when a file is deleted, its name is lost; after installing this library, the names of deleted files are logged and accessible via the e2undel program.

However, I did not test the library on a heavily loaded server. Included is a l recover 1. They store a chained list of file names and their associated file names. Especially, the list of data blocks is lost; so it is not possible to recover any deleted file.
If you give all users read access to the log needed to use e2undelevery user can e2yndel each deleted file. If it does, there is a chance the recently restored files overwrite deleted data.
In order to avoid these confusing entries, it might be useful to shift these directories on an own file system; so they are not displayed when trying to recover files on other file systems. Enter your user name "foo"then choose the time interval when you deleted the file 1: Enter the inode of a file to recover. Of course, you can only recover files by name that were deleted after installing e2undel.

If a user can recover deleted files on a file system, he can read all data on this file system. Other deleted files, however, are displayed when using the -a option.

If you have to install it, you can use the more comfortable e2undel as well. That is why ext2 undeletion tools usually don't work with the ext3 file system.

Deleted files are displayed in a table user name by deletion interval. This also holds true if every user has read access to the file system device files. Redundant entries can exist after using the undel library for some time if several files were stored and deleted on the same inode. The program does not manipulate any internal ext2 structures, requires only read access to the devices it works on, and uses Ted Ts'o's ext2fs library for all ext2 low level operations.
If you use the program and find it helpful, please send me a short note. With this information, it is possible to recover deleted files by name. Of course, e2undel also works without the undel library as outlined in the deleted file recovery howtobut you lose the functionality to recover deleted files by name if you don't use libundel - maybe the best part of this tool. When following the installation instructions, read access to the libundel log is granted only for root.
